FIELDING GRADUATE UNIVERSITY
MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY FACULTY POSITION
School of Psychology
The Ph.D. program in Media Psychology at Fielding Graduate University is the first of its kind. We are seeking a full-time faculty member to serve a diverse population of talented, experienced, and committed students who have identified leadership roles in media-related fields among their career objectives. We admit individuals who contribute unique media, research and practice perspectives and competencies to the pursuit of their doctoral degree, and they work closely with a dedicated group of faculty who are academically, professionally, and culturally diverse.
Fielding Graduate University is a leader in distributed graduate education. Faculty members are located throughout the US and maintain extensive nationwide contact with students, and each other, through regular face-to-face academic meetings, participation in national learning sessions, visits to other faculty/student groups, and telecommunication via the internet. This program reflects a strong sense of commitment to academic excellence and a supportive spirit of collegiality.
Responsibilities: This faculty member will be responsible for core knowledge areas (KA's, Fielding's equivalent of traditional courses) in Media Psychology and perhaps some content in other areas of psychology. We are especially in need of someone with a mix of cognitive, social, and/or positive psychology as applied to media issues. Expertise in the Tufte approach to visualization of information is particularly welcome. We also need this individual to be able to supervise the learning of SPSS and similar methods of data analysis, as well as content analysis.
The position involves individual and small group tutorial instruction; seminar presentations; research consultation; management of small learning groups, participation in University and School of Psychology governance; active independent scholarship, and, of exceptional importance, the supervision of dissertations.
Qualifications: Doctoral Degree in Psychology; relevant media psychology and other media experience; evidence of scholarly productivity; experience supervising research/dissertations and commitment to adult learners. Computer and information literacy and commitment to the use of technology in supporting learning is required. Individuals who would add to the human diversity of our faculty are especially encouraged to apply, as are individuals located in the Eastern or Southern regions of the United States. The position does not involve re-location to Fielding's headquarters in California, but some travel will be involved.
To apply: Interested applicants should e-mail a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information of three references to the Media Psychology Faculty Search Committee, at hr@fielding.edu with "Media Faculty Application" noted in the subject field. Alternatively, materials may be sent to the Human Resources Office at Fielding Graduate University, 2112 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. The position will remain open until it is filled, but applications should be received by October 31 to insure full consideration; the desired start date is January or February 2009. We encourage applications from historically underrepresented groups, women, and persons with disabilities.
